February Award Winners

Wow, I can't believe that February has come to an end already.  Time certainly flies.

This month I would like to recognize 3 amazing boys.

Our Principal's Award Winners this month were Xyrel and Red.

Red received his award for the excellent work he has done to learn double digit addition and subtraction.  This smart guy has been working hard at home and has come to class able to handle these types of problems, no sweat.  He has also been able to pick up the alternative methods that we have been learning in class.

Xyrel received his award for the excellent work that he has done on our Science Unit on the Elements of Nature.  This includes the water cycle and how we can protect the environment.   He has been participating a lot during class discussions, reading books that tie to the subject, and sharing his great questions with us.

Great work you guys.

I would also like to recognize Parker for being awarded for the Student of the Month Award. He received this award for being such a good friend to others.

January's Principal's Award Winners

This month has been one to celebrate excellence.

I would like to congratulate Parker and Preston.  They were both awarded with a Principal's Award.

Parker was given the award for doing an excellent job on his writing piece "Family Vacation" where he wrote about his favourite family tradition, traveling.

Preston won his award for doing an excellent job on his Sunset Artwork.  We were experimenting with mixing colours.  Preston was able to create a very realistic piece, not only by listening well to instructions but by doing an excellent job combining his colours.

Here are some other lovely examples of our sunset artwork.

This month we also met our goal for our jewels.  In our room we use small glass jewels to thank people who are following classroom procedures or who do something special (meeting their personal goals, being extra kind to someone else, etc.).

We agreed a few months ago that once we had filled the jar three times we would have a pizza party to celebrate.   Last week we accomplished our goal, filling the jar for the third time.

Our class will be celebrating on Valentine's Day during lunch.  I will be sending home notes about this next week.

Enjoy the cold weather everyone.  :)

Charlotte's Web

Hello Everyone,

This entry is a little belated but I have been fighting off a cold for the past few days.

As you probably know our school has been taking part in One School, One Book, where all of the students from K to 5 will be reading Charlotte's Web with their families at home.   The intention of this program is to increase the awareness of the importance of reading to your children, increase the sense of school community and to encourage a love of reading.

I hope everyone has enjoyed this program so far and continues to love this book.

I have included a page from www.rif.org/documents/us/reading_aloud.pdf, a brochure that quickly explains why it is helpful to read to your children.

Welcome Back

Hello Everyone,

Welcome back to school.  It's been a busy and productive first week.

We have been working on problem solving in math. It's much more involved that it was when I was a kid but the kids seem to do very well.  We are working on making connections to the math problems.  This means that the kids need to write about what the problem reminds them of, what other solutions would work, or how they could use this math in a similar problem in the future.

We are continuing with our Traditions and Celebrations unit in English and Social Studies.  We have been looking at different New Year's Celebrations.  We will be discussing Chinese New Year, Diwali (a Hindu/Jain/Sikhs Celebration), The Midwinter Festival (an Iroquois Celebration), Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year Celebration), and Ukrainian New Year.

In Health we are looking at healthy eating. The kids love this subject.

In Science we will be looking at air and water, including the water cycle.

As mentioned in the agendas, today is Early Dismissal.  Students will be leaving at 2:30 today.

Book Orders are due Friday next week.

Thanks everyone.  Stay warm.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

Merry Christmas Everyone,

Thank you so much to all of the families who came out for our Christmas Concert.  I think you will agree that all of the students did an excellent job.  I was so very proud of them.

Friday we will be having our assembly at 10:45.  We will also be having a party with the entire school.  For this party,  the students will be watching a movie (title TBA) in the afternoon.

Just a reminder that for the party students are welcome to wear pajamas.  That's right... Friday is Pajama Day.

I hope everyone has a wonderful, safe Christmas Holiday.

All my best.

Congratulations

Congrats to our November Principal's Award Winners.

This month Paige, Polina, and Amy won the award for doing an excellent job on their Barbara Reid inspired artwork.

They all tried their very best and I am so proud of them.  Their work will be displayed in the library, along with their classmates for the next week or so.  Their picture will also be at the office for the next month.

Congratulations again girls.

A Busy Week

Hello Everyone,

Here is a quick overview of the important things happening this week.

Parent Teacher interviews are Wednesday and Thursday night.  If you did not receive your appointment time from your child please call the school to schedule a time (786-5510).

Friday will be Green Day for our school's spirit day this month.  The students and teachers are wearing green to cheer on the Saskatchewan Rough Riders in the Grey Cup.

I will be sending home permission forms this week for our Christmas field trip.  We will be going to the Yorkton Western Development Museum for their Christmas Past program.  This program connects with our ELA outcomes for our Celebrations and Traditions Unit as well as with our Social outcomes for the year.
If you are interested in volunteering as a supervisor for this field trip please notify me on your child's permission form.

Have a great week everyone.
